What is Identity-Based Bullying?

Identity-based bullying is a dangerous form of harassment in which students are targeted for their race, sexuality, class, religion, immigration status, disability, or appearance. This may cause students to internalize negative attitudes about themselves, causing insecurity and self-dislike. Teachers can play a role in preventing this by educating their class about various identities – through diverse curriculum or presentations – and by acknowledging the internal biases we hold. They may also invest time into supporting students, and encourage other students to take on roles as allies.
