Responding to Hate Speech and Bullying in the Digital Age

With technology so widely accessible and hateful rhetoric across the internet, it can be difficult for kids to realize the future implications of their actions online. When derogatory images and commentary are shared online, schools should strive to create a dialogue and widen their students’ perspectives, helping them understand tragic events in the media and not to contribute to the negativity. Instead of brushing off instances of bullying that stem from these events, educators should encourage students to confide in them, especially before they send out something online in response.
